Benton Johnson
Skidmore, Owens & Merrill

Structural engineer at SOM, Benton brings new technologies and approaches to the fields of structural engineering and sustainable design. He has led the firm’s multiyear timber tower research project, advancing full-scale testing of mass-timber systems, and has pioneered 3D-printed building innovations in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His work transforms experimental ideas into practical, efficient, and sustainable solutions across building typologies. At 100 Mount Street in Sydney, he directed the design of an exposed mega bracing system that reduced cost and carbon while maximizing leasable space. He is active in several professional organizations.
